Masseter Botox is neurotoxin placed into the masseter — the large muscle at the back of the jaw that you use to chew and clench. Relaxing it does two things: it eases the tension of grinding and clenching, and, over months of treatment, it can soften the appearance of a heavy or square jawline.
What masseter Botox treats
- Clenching and grinding (bruxism). Many people get relief from jaw tension — and the headaches and soreness that ride along with it.
- Jaw slimming. As the muscle relaxes over repeated treatments, the lower-face silhouette can gradually soften. This is a cosmetic effect that builds over months, not a one-visit change.
- TMJ-related tension. It can be an adjunct for masseter-driven jaw discomfort, often alongside other care.
How long does it take?
For tension and clenching, relief often begins within one to two weeks. For slimming, the change is gradual and serial — the muscle needs time to relax and reduce with repeated sessions over months. Anyone promising an overnight jawline is overpromising.
What to expect
It's a few small, deep injections per side and usually well-tolerated. Like other neurotoxin, it lasts on the order of a few months, and you return when the tension or bulk returns. (More on duration in how long does Botox last.)
Why technique matters here
The masseter sits near the muscles that shape your smile. Placed too far forward or too shallow, product can drift and change your smile — the classic complaint people bring from treatment done poorly elsewhere. The prevention is simple to say and requires skill to do: keep the injections deep and in the posterior safe zone, and dose conservatively with a review. Choosing a trained, clinical injector is the whole game.
